This training is proposed to superusers responsible for technical maintenance.

Prerequisites

Bronze Accreditation – RM & PM workstation
Or previous training : Introduction to PM&A (T’A)
Basic technical background (such as Unix and/or Sybase).
Other training would be helpful to broaden the understanding of the functional context, but is not essential to perform most system administration tasks.

Administrating Sybase (T'A) – Technical

This course enables the participants to do the Sybase administration tasks linked to Triple’A.

Topics Include

  • Sybase architecture (dataserver, backup server)
  • Understand what is an open server, a Triple’A server
  • Sybase tools (Sybase Central, isql)
  • How to start, stop and check the Sybase processes
  • Determine Sybase version and Open client version
  • Overview of the $SYBASE directory
  • Understand the interfaces file, SYBASE.sh, the RUN files, the sql.ini, …
  • Understand the Sybase variables (e.g.: DSQUERY, …)
  • Sybase databases concept
  • Data allocation including databases (and their options), devices (see the raw device, filesystem and RAM disk aspects), and segments
  • Be able to analyze the free space
  • Content of the different database
  • Locking scheme concept (ROL, DOL, APL)
  • Security concepts (login, users, role , group)
  • Backup and restore (dump, load)
  • Table content extration/importation (bcp)
  • Database consistency check (dbcc commands)
  • Process management
  • Batch overview
  • Performance aspect: update statistics, reorg, sp_recompile, cache configuration
  • See how to check who is logged, how to kill a Sybase connection, how to determine who is generating locks, determine the query plan of a query which lasts to long

No pre-requisite required, but the “Introduction to PM&A (T’A) is highly recommended.

Stand alone duration: 2 days
If this course is concatenated with the SQL course for Triple’A (2 days), the two courses can be given in 4 days.


Inside PM&A (T’A) – Navigating with SQL Language

This course enables the participants to be able to launch different SQL commands. The course is based on a Triple’A database; therefore, the data model of Triple’A is used during the course and bring simultaneously a better knowledge of the different Triple’A tables.

Topics Include

  • Database concept (table, datatype, keys, view, index, database)
  • SQL basics: select, insert, select into, update, dalete
  • Join and union uncluding inner and outer joins
  • Summarizing, grouping and sorting
  • Datatype conversion, and see different Sybase functions
  • Table and view creation/deletion, modification
  • Concept and creation of stored procedures
  • Be able to find an object by using the table sysobjects
  • Using subqueries
  • Be able to create a file which contains the output of a SQL command
  • Introduction into the performance aspect
  • Use the Sybase help “Sybooks”
  • Sybase query tools : isql (with the options) and SQL Advantage
  • How to secure a SQL statement within a transaction
  • Triple’A data model and meta-dictionnary
  • And a lot of exercises are included during the training
  • See how to check who is logged, how to kill a Sybase connection, how to determine who is generating locks, determine the query plan of a query which lasts to long

All the people who are doing SQL request on a Triple’A database.
